Potency of Prayer
Date
I have catered for transformational retreats for 10+ years now and nourished hundreds of hungry hearts all over the world. Catering for these kinds of events is so much more than simply putting a meal on the table – as the kitchen and the energy held in that space is an integral part of the deep inner journey each participant embarks upon, it is an anchor, a place of nurture and integration.
It is because of this knowing that I create a space where people are not only fuelling up for the work they are doing but also receiving nourishing wisdom and the opportunity to drop in and practice giving thanks.
The potency of prayer, in the way of giving thanks for our food, brings us into the practice of mindful eating, into presence. Not only is it a beautiful honoring life and opportunity to cultivate right relationship with the earth; but when we take a moment to pause, breathe, and give thanks – our nervous systems settle into a Parasympathetic state (rest, relax, and digest). It is in this state and this state alone that we have the potential to properly assimilate the nutrients we are about to take into our bodies. It is in this state that healing happens.
Today I am so happy to be sharing with you a food prayer that was shared with me at my graduation from the Seven Bowls School of Nutrition, Nourishment, and Healing. Located in Boulder Colorado, a small group of amazing women and I spent almost two years training under the guidance of Esther Cohen (https://www.alchemyofnourishment.com/) and her faculty. This school not only gave us many tools to work with others but the inner journey of transformation we all went on was profound – initiating us into our roles as practitioners and facilitators.
Since receiving this special prayer, I have shared it in every circle I have ever had the honor of holding – touching the hearts of many hundreds of beautiful beings from all around this beautiful earth we call home.
And today, I want to share it with you here…
For thousands and thousands of years, I have sat down with friends around me and a bowl of food before me and have given thanks to the gods who have helped me to fill it.
In far-off mountain ranges, where I have pitted muscle and will and worked to carve a flat field from a formidable slope – my bowl has been filled.
Where land gives way to the sea and I have plucked the sweet fruits from the trees and harvested the generous bounty from the ocean womb – my bowl has been filled.
In the shadow of the temples, at the foot of the mountains, where I have plowed and planted the land and tamed the beasts who have provided for me in exchange for their keeping – my bowl has been filled.
In fertile valleys and colder barren lands and seemingly empty, sandy, dry deserts. In thick forests and along rivers and streams. In village, city, and farm. In every land and through every season, for thousands and thousands of years, I have sat down with friends around me and a bowl of food before me and given thanks to the gods who have helped me to fill it.
And on this day at this time, as we sit down with our friends around us and a bowl of food before us, we give thanks to the divine spirit and choose:
Love before intolerance, understanding before impatience, and gratitude before greed – so that we may truly nourish our bodies, spirits, and souls and live in harmony and appreciation with all of the animals, plants, and spirits on this earth.
May our bowl always be filled.
